PRM Gearboxes are made to the highest engineering standards by Newage Transmissions Limited at their purpose built UK plant at Coventry.

In 1997 all PRM model numbers were changed to reflect the maximum 'rating' of each gearbox. For example; a PRM 120 will accept maximum torque of 120Nm (at an intermittent speed of 5000rpm).

Mechanically Operated Transmissions:

Mechanically Operated transmissions select rotation (ahead or astern) by simply shuttling a cone laterally backwards and forwards.

PRM 80 & 120: Suitable for smaller boats with a pleasure or light-commercial rating.

Hydraulically Operated Transmissions:

'Hydraulically Operated Transmissions' offer the same ratios in ahead and astern. They should not be confused with Hydraulic-Drives.

Hydraulically operated units are driven by a drive-plate bolted to the engine flywheel on one side, and engaged to the gearbox on the other.  When the engine starts up a crankshaft conected to the fly-wheel begins to drive the input shaft of the gearbox.  This, in turn, operates an oil pump, which then delivers oil into an operating piston.

As gears are selected at the helm the oil is redirected to a multi-disc clutch, which drives the prop-shaft either ahead or astern. All gears within a hydraulically operated transmission are constantly engaged; the only internal movement is the operating piston and multi-disc clutch.

The advantages of hydraulically operated transmissions.

  • With gears constantly meshed, the hydraulically operated transmission receives less internal wear than its mechanical cousin, allowing for smoother gear changes, greater efficiency and an extended working life.
  • Gear ratios are identical in both directions and clutches are self-adjusting, which means that other than an occasional oil change they are virtually maintenance free.

PRM 150 & 260: Suitable for pleasure craft and light comercial applications.
PRM 500 & 750: Suitable for vessels with pleasure, light-comercial or heavy ratings.
PRM 1000 & 1500: For ferries and in-shore commercial craft etc..

Albatross Marine will fit, retro-fit, repair and service your PRM transmission and offer first-class after sales support and advice on all related technical issues. Add-ons:

Trolling Valve:
This essential devise gives you total control of your propeller speed from 1200 rpm down to zero, and fits all the units in the range from the PRM 260 and above.
Power take-offs:
These have been designed to bolt directly onto the rear of the gearbox, and can be supplied with new transmissions, or easily retro-fitted.
