Python-Drive:
A flexible drive-shaft

How it works

As you are probably aware, the force your propeller exerts on the water is transmitted in the opposite direction back up the propeller shaft. These forces are in turn transmitted through the gearbox and engine, and their mounting blocks, to the hull. Basically, the propeller pushes the engine, which drags the boat along with it. This, of course, contributes significantly to the extra vibration and wear that marine driveline applications endure due to the high levels of friction in the system.

The Python-Drive is designed to eliminate the friction and counteractive forces inherent in a traditional driveline by separating the natural vibration of the engine and gearbox from the incredible force of the propeller.

Python-Drive: Cross-section

a) Bearing housing
b) Thrust bearing
c) Thrust absorbtion blocks
d) Hub
e) Internal Clamp
f) CV joint, thrust bearing side
g) Intermediate shaft
h) CV joint, gearbox side
i) Gearbox adapter flange
j) Propeller shaft

As you can see above, the Python-Drive comes in two sections: The gearbox side unit and the thrust bearing unit, with the variable intermediate CV-shaft between.* The gearbox side units and shafts are designed specifically to soak up natural vibration and negate the need for perfect driveline alignment, while the thrust-bearing unit's construction allows the propeller force to be transmitted directly to the hull. Units and shafts are matched to your engine output and gearbox ratios, with enough variations in the system to meet the requirements of even the most demanding application or compact engine bays.

PD Thrust Bearing Units

Python_drive : Thrust bearing units...

The Thrust units and CV drive-shafts give unprecedented
levels of flexibility to the
Python-Drive system
as well as the driveline as a whole.

An easy to install and virtually maintenance-free design means that it can be 'fitted and forgotten,' giving you the confidence and the knowledge that you have added real value and reliability to your vessels transmission, whether large or small.

A range of units, imported into the UK exclusively by Albatross Marine Limited, are available in both metric and imperial shaft diameters, from ¾ inch (19.05mm) to 4 inches (100mm). Thrust units and CV drive-shafts are sold separately if required - bespoke CV-shafts are also available. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
